Best Overall: Shark IZ462H Vertex DuoClean PowerFins Lightweight Cordless Stick Vacuum

Why You Should Like Us

  • Powerful suction on all types of flooring
  • In a sense, vacuums move themselves.
  • Battery life is really lengthy.
  • For convenient storage, it folds in half.

What Isn’t Right

  • Greater capacity for the collection canister would be beneficial.
  • Pieces are packaged in their own containers.
  • Picking up heavy objects makes a lot of noise.

Shark’s lightweight (but powerful) vacuum was the winner of our two-day test, which included a variety of different tests. Even the toughest popcorn kernels and dusty Cheerios were vacuumed up by it during its first pass. When the floor head was lifted off the ground, the materials didn’t scatter all over the place, and the vacuum was able to swoop in and clean everything. Our tester gave it a perfect score of 5 for cleaning power on all types of surfaces, noting that it required minimal effort on their side.

Our coffee table and couch were no match for the Shark Vertex DuoClean PowerFins Cordless Stick Vacuum when it came to maneuverability. After completing the obstacle course, the vacuum cleaner was described as “flawless” and “silent” most of the time by the tester. While the collection container could be larger, you’ll find that it’s simple and painless to empty into your trash can and deserves our tester’s 5-star rating for ease of emptying.

This cordless stick vacuum, which has a longer battery life than other cordless options, at 60 minutes, folds in half for easy storage after you’re done cleaning. Consequently, it may be used in both tiny apartments and large homes with pets because of its versatility. As a whole, our reviewer gave this vacuum a 5-star rating nearly entirely, with only a few minor gripes, including that the handheld component is a bit hefty and that each piece of the vacuum is individually wrapped when it comes out of the box. However, even with the packaging, putting this gadget up for use took less than three minutes.

It weighs 9.04 pounds, measures 46.46 x 9.65 x 10.24 inches, and has a cordless battery life of 60 minutes. The bin holds 1.4 quarts, and the cleaning path is 10.63 inches wide.

The Eureka Flash Lightweight Stick Vacuum Cleaner shouldn’t be overlooked. This budget-friendly pick has all the suction power and thoughtful features of a more expensive one. To start, it’s incredibly easy to assemble—our tester needed just a minute and a half to put it together and gave the process a total of 4.5 stars. In addition, on hardwood, low-pile carpet, and medium-pile carpet, this vacuum proved to be powerful and was able to collect all materials in one or two passes. Now, the motor did get warm on the high-pile carpet, and the vacuum became difficult to maneuver through the threads. However, our tester still rated it an average of 4.5 stars for its overall effectiveness, docking it for the troubling high-pile experience only.

Not to be forgotten is the Eureka Flash Lightweight Stick Vacuum Cleaner! The suction power and thoughtful features of a more costly vacuum can be found in this budget-friendly model. Putting it together only took our tester an hour and a half, earning them an impressive 4.5 out of 5 stars for ease of use and assembly. It was also able to capture all of the debris in one or two passes when used on hardwood, low- and medium-pile carpeting. Despite this, the vacuum proved difficult to use on the high-pile carpet since the vacuum’s motor got hot. As a result of this, our reviewer gave it an overall rating of 4.5 stars, with just one star deducted for the high-pile issue.

At 45 by 11.1 by 7.9 inches, this vacuum cleaner weighs 7.4 pounds, has a 30-foot cord, and has a 1.05-quart container. It is also compatible with carpet and hardwood floors.

Best Upright: Shark NV151 Navigator Swivel Pro Complete Upright Vacuum

Why You Should Like Us

  • A variety of surface options
  • It’s a cinch to empty.
  • Assembling is a breeze.

What Isn’t Right

  • Under furniture, it is difficult to move.
  • Surfaces don’t transfer well.

Since upright vacuums are recognized for their suction power, many people prefer them despite the fact that they take up more room. Shark’s Navigator Swivel Pro Complete Upright Vacuum was the clear winner in our tests of eight different upright vacuum cleaners. For a more modest price, Shark’s Navigator series vacuum cleaners come equipped with suction power, surface-specific cleaning settings, crevice and upholstery attachments. For low-pile and medium-pile carpets, this Navigator model received 5-star ratings, while the medium- and high-pile carpets received 4.5-star ratings. With one or two passes, our tester found that it glided over the surfaces while gathering up things rapidly, and only received a worse rating if it had to make more than one or two. It was rewarding to be able to utilize one hand for multiple passes, despite the heavy and hefty design.

As a bonus, they appreciated the ability to switch between carpet and hardwood floor settings to suit their needs. Even though it was difficult to move from concrete to carpet (the floor head had to be pulled up) and difficult to reach under any furniture, it was rather quiet and simple to empty. Assembling this pick is “straightforward,” too, according to our tester. However, it took three minutes for them to complete the assembly, which earned them an overall 4 star review for its ease of use.

This vacuum cleaner has the following specs: 45.66 x 12 x 9.64-inches in size, 15 pounds of weight, a 25-foot power cord, no battery life, and a 0.4-quart capacity bin.

Best Cordless Stick: Dyson v11 Animal Cordless Stick Vacuum Cleaner

Why You Should Like Us

  • Is equipped with a “turbo mode.”
  • Quiet operation
  • Intuitive and easy to use

What Isn’t Right

  • Sensitive to the trigger
  • Attachments are not allowed.

Vacuuming frequency is dependent on the size of your family, but with cordless stick vacuums, it is simple to do so on a regular basis. Compared to upright models, cordless stick vacuums have a lot of (often well-deserved) hype because they’re more convenient to use and carry around the house. However, only the Dyson v11 Animal Cordless Stick Vacuum Cleaner can be proclaimed the best. This Dyson vacuum cleaner is no exception to the company’s reputation for high-end small equipment. For pet lovers, its entire collection of attachments, including a dirt brush, crevice tool, and a tiny motorized tool, make it particularly useful for cleaning the fur off of cushions and in hard to reach places. In addition, its 60-minute battery life makes it ideal for addressing these smaller tasks, as well as routine vacuuming, without the need to recharge.

This vacuum was able to remove dirt and debris from a variety of surfaces throughout our testing. To make things even more convenient, it was also lightweight and simple to manoeuvre under objects like coffee tables and even low couches. It was easy to converse over this stick vacuum’s excellent noise level score during our testing. This vacuum has a lot of uses, is powerful, and is simple to operate.

It has a 10.28 x 49.65 x 9.84-inch dimensions, a 6.68-pound weight, a cordless battery life of 60 minutes, a bin volume of 0.8 quarts, and a cleaning path width of 9.84 inches.

Best Canister: Miele Compact C1 Turbo Team Bagged Canister Vacuum

Why You Should Like Us

  • Excruciatingly low-volume
  • Accessible in even the most confined situations
  • Slowly fills itself up.
  • Powerful suction

What Isn’t Right

  • Bags must be replaced.
  • The instructions were a little confusing.
  • A bad match for a household with pets.

In a canister vacuum, the suction force of an upright vacuum is combined with the maneuverability of a stick vacuum. The Miele Compact C1 Turbo Team Bagged Canister Vacuum is the best canister vacuum for hardwood, low-pile carpet, and high-pile carpet since it was very good at removing all materials. Hair clogged up the canister vac’s otherwise powerful suction, so it might not be the ideal choice for families with pets. Aside from that, the vacuum is bulky and difficult to maneuver up and down flights of stairs, so it’s not the best choice for that purpose. So, it received lower star ratings in categories like efficacy and mobility.

In a home with lots of small crevices to clean, this vacuum is ideal, as it easily maneuvered under and around a couch and coffee table. When you’re done cleaning, the 21-foot rope can be automatically rewound, making it “so silent it’s laughable.” Because it’s a bagged model, this machine takes a while to fill up, which is a nice perk. It’s expensive even before you buy the replacement bags, so having a large canister is a big help. Ultimately, the benefits of this vacuum far exceed the drawbacks, making it a worthwhile investment.

There is no battery life given for this vacuum, however it measures 16.9 x 9.1 x 9.8 inches, weighs 15 pounds, has a 21-foot cord, and is compatible with carpet and hardwood floors.

Best Compact: NEQUARE S180 Corded Lightweight Vacuum with Self-Standing

Why You Should Like Us

  • Excruciatingly low-volume
  • Flexible and fluid movement

Flexible and fluid movement

  • Movement that is both fluid and flexible.
  • It’s a good idea to drain it frequently.

NEQUARE’s S180 Corded Lightweight Vacuum is ideal for people who live in apartments, condos, or other tiny dwellings. The Spruce’s reviewers were pleasantly delighted by this tiny vacuum cleaner. In the first place, its small size makes it convenient to transport from one room to another. You won’t have to prop it up against a couch or chair because it stands on its own, making it easy for everyone in your family to use. It received a perfect score on hardwood floors and a 4 star rating on both low and medium pile carpets, according to our testers. The high-pile carpet was a bit of a challenge to navigate, but overall its movement was fluid and easy to regulate.

In fact, our tester described this vacuum as “very versatile,” noting that it was a snap to clean beneath the couch and coffee table. It was also a breeze to empty the vacuum, however it had to be done more frequently than other versions. The canister size is something our tester would alter about the NEQUARE small vacuum. In addition, they would want to have more than one setting available. As a result, this vacuum is one of our favorites because it is the quietest in The Lab.

Carpet and hardwood floors are compatible. Dimensions: 17.48 x 13.54 x 7.32 in. | Weight: 2.42 lbs. | Cord Length: Not specified | Battery Life: Not applicable. | Bin Volume: Not listed.

11 best vacuums to consider, according to cleaning experts

Best Handheld: BLACK+DECKER HSVB420J POWERSERIES 2-in-1 Cordless Stick Vacuum

Why You Should Like Us

  • Clicking sounds can be heard as the handheld model is connected.
  • Attachments can be stored in the attached storage.
  • On the floor, there is a light.
  • Empty in a hurry

What Isn’t Right

  • Not as good on all types of surfaces.
  • More options are needed.

The BLACK+DECKER POWERSERIES 2-in-1 Cordless Stick Vacuum makes it far easier than other vacuums to convert to a handheld vacuum. Because of its smart design, it’s our top selection for a portable vacuum. To use this vacuum, all you need is the dustbuster that snaps into the handle and floor head. The dustbuster becomes the collection canister when you use an upright vacuum cleaner. Need a dustpan and brush? This is a great way to keep your attachments close to hand when you’re not using them.

Assembling this vacuum was a breeze for our test subject, who was able to clean under a couch or in a dimly-lit area in less than one minute. There were some complaints about the way it handled Cheerios on floor and low-pile carpet (essentially pushing them around), but on medium and high-pile carpets, it received a perfect score of 4.5 out of 5. Although it was penalized for missing some particles that was ground into the carpet, the handheld vacuum completed the job. The fact that it stood on its own appealed to our tester. Emptying this vacuum was likewise a snap.

This vacuum cleaner is suitable for a variety of flooring types, including carpet, laminate, hardwood, tile, and vinyl, and is 22x 8.3x 6.5 inches in size. It weighs 5.84 pounds and has a 30-minute battery life.

Best for Carpet: Samsung VS15T7032R4 Jet 70 Pet Cordless Stick Vacuum

Why You Should Like Us

  • Has a variety of suction options.
  • Can simply move surfaces
  • Quiet operation
  • Battery life is adequate.

What Isn’t Right

  • Isn’t very swivel
  • There is no cost associated with this.
  • As a result, it’s difficult to empty the canister

The Samsung Jet 70 Pet Cordless Stick Vacuum excels in carpet cleaning. On the hardwood floor, our tester awarded this vacuum a 2-star rating because it pushed about the popcorn kernels and Cheerios, making it difficult to vacuum. The low-pile carpet received a perfect score, while the medium and high-pile carpets received a 4.5. The vacuum just needed one or two passes over the low-pile carpet to collect everything. It was more difficult to navigate on the high-pile carpet, but once in high gear, it was able to pick up the materials. Our tester discovered that it didn’t swivel very well during the obstacle course. The carpet was no match for it, yet it managed to squeak under the couch with no problem. As a result of its mobility, it was awarded a perfect score of 4.

Throughout this process, the vacuum remained quiet. It did become quite heavy, and emptying is a bit of a hassle since hair does get caught up in the filter and there’s no button to release the canister. You have to empty the vacuum from the top, which requires a bit of work on your part. Assembly, on the other hand, is a breeze after you’ve found out how to use the batteries and the wall mount. Plan to charge this vacuum immediately, as it doesn’t come with any “starter” charge.

Vacuums stayed silent during this process, which is unusual. Due to its large size, it became rather cumbersome to empty, and there is no button to release the canister’s canister. In order to remove the vacuum cleaner’s bag from the top, you’ll have to put in some effort. Once you find out how to use the battery and the wall mount, though, the setup is a breeze. It doesn’t come with a “starting” charge, so you’ll need to charge it right away.

Best for Hardwood: TINECO Floor One S3 Smart Wet/Dry Vacuum

Why You Should Like Us

  • There are two water tanks in this home.
  • On wooden floors, it glides easily.
  • Smart features are included.

What Isn’t Right

  • Only hardwoods are suitable.
  • Environmentally harmful packaging

In our tests, we found that the TINECO Floor One S3 Smart Wet/Dry Vacuum works well on hardwood floors. Our tester gave this combo vacuum a perfect score of 5 stars for its performance on hardwood floors. For its ability to remove all of the materials from a low-pile carpet in just one or two passes, it was awarded 5 stars When this wet-dry vacuum tried to tackle a thicker carpet, it erupted in error messages. So, if you’re searching for a vacuum that can clean all of your home’s surfaces, this is not it.

For those wishing to bring out the most in their hardwood, this TINECO model is here to help out. If you use the dual tanks, you can even use it to fully wash your floor. Because it’s so quiet, you’ll be able to carry on a conversation with another family member while using it. Although the package isn’t very eco-friendly, our tester found the setup to be simple and a good 4 stars. “Let’s go! I’m ready!” it exclaims as soon as it is turned on. In addition, it “nearly knows intuitively when its duty is complete” and will sit idle if necessary, without totally turning off.. Just avoid using it on carpet and you’ll be OK.

It has dimensions of 43.3 x 10 x 11.3 inches, a weight of 9.9 pounds, a cord length of not applicable, and a battery life of 35 minutes. The bin volume is 0.42 quarts and the cleaning path width is 9 inches.

Best for Pet Hair: Bissell 22889 ICONpet Cordless Stick Vacuum

Why You Should Like Us

  • There are three levels of suction.
  • Accurate in removing hair
  • On the floor, there is a light.

What Isn’t Right

  • It is unable to support itself
  • Attachments can be a bit of a headache.

A vacuum that isn’t frightened of a hairy scenario is essential for pet owners. This is where the Bissell ICONpet Cordless Stick Vacuum comes in. Our testers gave this product 4s and 5s across the board and found it to be extremely successful at removing hair, even at the lowest suction setting. Assembling this vacuum took about three minutes for our tester, who was only little perplexed by a few of the included attachments. Prior to putting it through its paces on the surfaces and obstacles on the course, we made sure it was fully charged.

Low- to medium-pile carpets proved to be the best for this vacuum, and the tester found it quite easy to use. However, it was still able to remove most of the debris in just one or two passes. Additionally, the light on the floor head of this vacuum made maneuvering through the living room much easier, especially with the couch and coffee table in the way. It’s quiet, too, and it’s simple to clean out. Just shake the collection canister a little bit to free anything that’s clinging to the bottom. We were a little let down by the fact that this vacuum couldn’t stand on its own like our tester. Over time, this feature—or rather, the absence of it—became infuriating. Suction modes were “strong in their own ways,” however, and this vacuum was awarded a 4.5-star overall efficacy rating, with only the kernels deducted.

To get the most out of this vacuum cleaner, it’s important to know its dimensions, weight, cord length, and battery life. Its bin volume is 0.52 quarts, its cleaning path is 10.5 inches wide, and it’s compatible with carpet and hardwood floors.

Best Wet-Dry: Shark VacMop Pro Cordless Wet/Dry Stick Vacuum

Why You Should Like Us

  • It has a reasonable cost.
  • On the floor, there is a light.
  • A set of replacement pads is included.

What Isn’t Right

  • Only hardwoods are suitable.
  • Lack of long-term power

Wet-dry vacuums can be used to clean both wet and dry surfaces at the same time. When it comes to contemporary small appliances, Shark VACMOP is the best. Only two minutes are needed to install this stick vacuum, including adding the detergent and connecting the cleaning pad. The handle features a button for spraying detergent on the floor, and it’s quite easy to slide over hardwood. You can see what you’re cleaning and how effective the product is thanks to the light on the floor head.

The detergent’s fresh aroma is fairly mild, and the small profile makes it easy to carry. With the VACMOP, you don’t have to go to the store immediately away because it comes with four ready-to-use replacement cleaning pads. This product is not good for carpets and the canister could be a bit larger, but it runs extremely quietly and is ideal for your kitchen or bathroom. It also comes in at a reasonable price point. Overall, this vacuum received 5-star reviews from our testers, with the only criticism being the size of the canister.

With a width of 10 inches, this vacuum is capable of cleaning hardwood, tile, laminate, and vinyl floors. Its dimensions are 47.87 by 9.5 by 5.3 inches and it weighs 5 pounds.

Best Robot: iRobot Roomba 690 Robot Vacuum with Wi-Fi Connectivity

Why You Should Like Us

  • Scheduled sessions can be set to run at predetermined times.
  • Brushes for various surfaces
  • a 90-minute total running time

What Isn’t Right

  • Avoid using this product on high-pile carpets.
  • Bins with low capacity

This brush may be used on both carpets and hardwood floors, removing both minute particles and larger material.

You can also schedule and operate this Roomba from your smartphone thanks to its WiFi capabilities. It also has sensors that tell it when it has to make an additional pass because of dirt. Thanks to its cliff-detection sensors, the device won’t go down the steps, and it can run for up to 90 minutes on a single battery. The Roomba 690 performed best on low-pile carpet and hard surfaces, even though we didn’t test it in The Lab. They were pleased with how easy it was to clean and maintain, despite the fact that it periodically gets lost or tucked behind furniture.

Cleaning path width: 13 inches, bin volume: 0.63 quarts, weight: 7.8 pounds, cord length not relevant, battery life 90 minutes, compatible floor type carpet, hardwood

What Our Customers Have to Suggest

When it comes to keeping your home clean, it’s best to keep the floor free of debris as much as possible.” Because the spinning brush finds them so appetizing, power wires are particularly prone to attack. You can choose between an invisible linear or circular barrier when using the battery-powered ‘virtual wall’ unit included in the box.” As a product tester, Joy Merrifield has a lot to say.

How We Tested the Vacuums

In Brooklyn’s Industry City Lab, we compared 28 vacuum cleaners side by side. We began by unpacking and setting them up in real time, and then put them to the test to see which ones worked best—and which ones didn’t. Weight and portability, ease of transition from smooth to carpeted surfaces, and battery life of cordless devices were all taken into consideration.

Hair, popcorn kernels, and every parent’s constant companion: Cheerios, were all employed as measuring tools as our testers put each vacuum through its paces on both hardwood and carpeted floors. We kept track of how many passes it took to clean up the materials and whether or not any hair got caught in the beater bar during testing. Using a living room obstacle course, we were able to see how they handled themselves in confined spaces. In order to gauge the level of clutter and difficulty, we had our testers empty and replace the waste bags and bins. There are 12 vacuums that we believe are the best out there, based on consistent testing data.

What to Look for in a Vacuum

Weight

Vacuum cleaners are heavy, and if you’ve ever carried one up and down a flight of stairs, you know that weight is important. A heavy product might be a tremendous headache to move around. It’s a good thing that today’s vacuum cleaners are lighter and more maneuverable than the bulky devices that initially appeared in households decades ago.

The heavier upright vacuums are. Although they are heavier, their larger floor heads, more powerful motors, and larger dust bags more than make up for it. If you choose this type of vacuum, be prepared for it to weigh anywhere from 12 to 18 pounds, depending on the model. The weight of canister vacuums varies greatly. Ones as little as 8 pounds are available, but more powerful and feature-rich models (competing with upright vacuums) can weigh up to 18 or 20 pounds. There are a wide variety of cordless stick vacuums on the market, and they are typically the lightest. For light-duty vacuuming or spot cleaning in small places, they are designed to be easy to pick up. Between 3 and 7 pounds, they are the most common weight for them.

Compatible floor type

Before choosing a vacuum cleaner, think about where you intend to use it. Many of the picks on the market are specifically designed to clean hardwood floors, while others may also be used on laminate, tile, vinyl, and low- to high-pile carpets. Whether a vacuum cleaner has a brush roll or not can have an impact on what kind of flooring it’s best suited for. If you have hardwood or tile flooring, a vacuum without a brush roll is ideal since the stiff fibers of a brush roll could harm the finish or scatter dirt in all directions. On the other hand, certain vacuum cleaners with a brush roll allow you to turn off the brush’s rotation, which makes it safe for hardwood and effective on any type of hard surface floor.

Filter type

Many vacuum cleaners have filtering systems designed to capture tiny particles of dust and dander that would otherwise be expelled with the vacuum cleaner’s exhaust. Washable filters are an economical and easy-to-maintain option. This type of filter is often made of a sponge-like material that is easy to rinse and dries quickly in the air. Paper-like filters, on the other hand, need to be replaced every six months or so in order to preserve their efficiency.

Included attachments

HEPA filters, which stand for High-Efficiency Particulate Air, are the industry standard when it comes to vacuum filtration. Even microscopic dust and dander particles can be captured by these ultra-fine filters, which can trap particles as small as 0.3 microns. 1 With a HEPA filter, anyone who wants to eliminate dust, dander, pollen, and other microscopic particles in their home can greatly benefit from it. To keep their filtration capacities, HEPA filters must must be updated often. However, some newer models have the advantage of being washable.

Make sure your vacuum cleaner has all the accessories you need to complete your cleaning activities once you’ve found the one that’s right for you. When you buy a new vacuum, some of the accessories may come with it, while others may need to be purchased separately. Crevice tools, extension wands, and upholstery brushes are all useful accessories to have in your vacuum’s tool kit while doing a thorough cleaning job.

Pet-related cleaning equipment are another popular accessory for vacuums. To remove pet hair from your furniture, curtains, and other surfaces, you can use nozzle attachments with gripping surfaces, fine-tooth combs, or stiff brushes. As a pet owner, you should definitely consider purchasing a pet-friendly attachment, as it will help you get twice as much done with your cleaning time!

Yes, You Really Do Need to Clean Your Vacuum Cleaner—Here’s How

There is a good chance that you consider yourself to be a meticulous cleaner. After all, your house is always spotless and you use organic or natural materials to clean your surfaces. You dust and vacuum often as well. But until you find out what’s hidden in your vacuum cleaner and just how filthy it actually is, things appear to be going in the right direction.

It’s nothing new to admit that vacuum cleaners need to be cleaned on a regular basis (thanks to Monica Geller). In a study conducted in 2008 by experts at the University of Arizona, it was found that conventional vacuum cleaner brushes were covered in bacteria and other pathogens. Fifty percent of the vacuums tested carried fecal bacteria, thirteen percent included E. coli, and every vacuum tested contained mold.

But there’s more to come. More mold, the clostridium botulinum toxin gene, and bacteria with antibiotic resistance genes were detected in a study published in Applied and Environmental Microbiology in 2013.

It’s important to note that “vacuum emissions can release substantial quantities of human-derived microorganisms,” the researchers stated. Because of this, “infectious or allergenic aerosols could be inhaled” People with allergies, who are more sensitive to mold and bacteria, may experience even more of a reaction.

Isn’t it enough to make you want to start sweeping again? But don’t give up hope just yet; there may be an even better solution. Just a little elbow grease is all you need to do to get rid of germs in your vacuum cleaner as well.

After Every Use: Clean the Brushes and Bristles

Be cautious to inspect all brushes and bristles after each usage to make sure no debris or hair has become lodged in the bristles. If a brush has any loose hairs or strings, don’t pull them out: Instead, cut them out with a pair of scissors. To disinfect the brushes, spray them with a disinfectant spray.

After Every Few Uses: Empty the Vacuum Cannister

Rather than letting your vacuum’s canister fill up to the brim, vacuum experts recommend emptying it out every time you use it. As a rule of thumb, Vacuum Experts recommended that you empty the vacuum whenever it reaches half to two-thirds full. Your vacuum cleaner will be riddled with germs and bacteria before they have a chance to spread. You’ll also be helping your vacuum run better by emptying the canister.

About Once a Month: Check and Soak the Filters

As part of your annual cleaning regimen, vacuum filters should be examined more frequently, such as once a month. Find out where each filter is placed in your vacuum and how to remove it from the machine. Remove it, shake it, and rinse it under cool running water if it’s washable. Allow it to completely dry before putting it away.

Every 12 to 18 Months: Completely Disassemble Your Vacuum to Deep Clean

A decent rule of thumb is to take apart the complete vacuum once a year and thoroughly clean all of its parts. A can of compressed air and some dish soap and hot water are all you’ll need to get started.

The first step is to disassemble everything. Soak the canister and any other pieces that can be cleaned, such as the attachments. Before putting them back together, give them a thorough cleaning. Afterwards, blow out the vacuum’s crevices and nooks using a can of pressurized air. Cleaning wipes can be used on the external components as well.

Every Decade: Replace Your Vacuum

Researchers in Environmental Science & Technology found that vacuum cleaners get dirtier and dirtier as they get older. That means that if you’ve got a vacuum from your great aunt, it’s probably time to get rid of it.

Vacuums survive an average of eight years, according to Consumer Reports. Following the above tips and taking good care of your vacuum should allow you to get 10 years out of it. If you don’t, you’ll be dragging ten-year-old dirt throughout your house. Alternatively,

How Long Should a Vacuum Cleaner Last?

What is the Average Lifespan of Vacuum Cleaners?

According to Consumer Reports’ vacuum cleaner reliability survey, an average vacuum cleaner lifespan is eight years. However, the way you operate the vacuum also plays a role in how long it will last. Regular use reduces lifetime; a one-bedroom apartment owner’s use differs from that of the owner of an eighteen-bedroom home with ten occupants and three dogs. You may want to consider an upgrade if you frequently clean a large area with a vacuum cleaner that’s more than eight years old.

Factors that affect the Lifespan of Vacuums

  • The Product

The vacuum cleaner’s lifespan is influenced by the firm that makes it. Branded vacuum cleaners outperform and last longer than unbranded vacuum cleaners sold at local stores. Because big brands have more money, they can afford to buy high-quality components. Prior to the release of a new product, they carry out extensive product research and establish rigorous requirements for the quality of the final product. You can use the warranty duration to estimate the vacuum’s lifespan when purchasing a product from a well-known brand.

Choosing a vacuum cleaner can be difficult if you don’t know what you’re searching for. If you’re interested in learning more about certain vacuum cleaner features, check out the websites of the manufacturers.

  • Maintenance

You have the ability to ensure that the vacuum is being properly maintained. If you take good care of your vacuum, it will last longer and have fewer malfunctions. Vacuum cleaners need to be cleaned once a month, despite the fact that they are used to clean. Identify the issue and fix it if the vacuum develops a problem, such as making a strange noise.

  • Usage

If your cleaning area is large, the vacuum is more vulnerable to wear and tear from regular use. A vacuum’s lifespan is shortened when it has to work harder to remove dirt and grime from your carpets and floors. Misuse of the vacuum, such as forgetting to adjust the height when cleaning a high carpet pile or selecting the wrong model, contributes to the vacuum’s shortening of its life. An upright or handheld vacuum is better suited to cleaning small and high spaces, such as beddings and sofas, than a robot vacuum.

How to Prolong Vacuum Cleaner Life Expectancy?

Maintaining your vacuum cleaner and using it properly will extend its life lifespan. Tips on how to properly maintain a vacuum cleaner are provided here.

Regularly Empty the Bag and Dust Canister

Regular vacuum bag emptying is recommended, regardless of whether the vacuum bag is bagged or not. Leaving it to fill to the brim will make vacuuming difficult. The dirt in the machine could potentially clog it, which would reduce its effectiveness.

Clean Filters

Filters in vacuum cleaners trap dust, pollen, smoke, and bacteria. Because of this, the filters will finally become clogged. As a result, this must be avoided at all costs by regularly cleaning the filters.

Washable and reusable filters are common in vacuum cleaners. It makes it easy to clean them often without incurring a replacement cost. You don’t need to use chemicals to clean them when they’re caked with dirt and debris.

Disentangle the Motorized Brush

They can be reused and washed by the majority of vacuum cleaners on the market. They can be cleaned frequently without incurring a replacement cost because to this feature. You don’t need to use chemicals to clean them if they’ve accumulated a lot of debris and filth; simply running water will do the trick.

Cleaning up Liquids

Handheld vacuum cleaners with “wet/dry vacuuming” capabilities can only be used to clean up mild water spills and mishaps. A few canister and stick vacuums are designed to handle cleaning liquids, but the most majority are not. Vacuuming liquids can damage your machine and put you at risk of electrocution. In the absence of a suitable vacuum, wipe up spills with paper towels or a mop.

Avoid Carelessness when Handling the Power Cord

You should always keep the vacuum’s power cable away from the motorized brush, which can cut and shred it. Vacuums are dangerous if they have open electric cables hanging from them that could be electrocuted. Also, never pull your vacuum with the power cord attached when it’s in operation.

Tidy up before Vacuuming

The area you wish to vacuum should be cleaned up beforehand. Make sure to get rid of any little things that could harm your vacuum cleaner. Such things are far too large to be picked up by a vacuum cleaner.

FAQs

What happens if you don’t clean your vacuum?

As the dirt and debris wears down your vacuum’s belt and motor, it becomes increasingly difficult to clean. When you don’t empty your vacuum cleaner on a regular basis, it weakens its ability to remove lint and dirt.

How long should you keep a vacuum?

The average lifespan of a vacuum cleaner is eight years, according to Consumer Reports. However, not only does the brand matter when it comes to longevity, so does the amount of use you give it. In a 3,000-square-foot house with five people and two pets, you’ll use your vacuum far less than you would in a one-bedroom apartment all to yourself.

Do I need to clean my vacuum?

You should also clean your vacuum cleaner on a regular basis. In order to keep your vacuum running at its peak efficiency and removing more trash from the floor, it’s important to keep the filters, hose and attachments, canister, and other parts of the vacuum clean.

How long should vacuum cleaners last?

Vacuum cleaners typically last for eight years on average. 2 However, the type of vacuum you use is a crucial consideration when trying to extend the life of your gear. For example, if your vacuum is a cordless stick pick, it will have a shorter lifespan because it uses a battery rather than ordinary electricity.

As you can see, there are a wide variety of ways to extend the life of your vacuum cleaner. Regularly emptying the bag and cleaning the filter will keep your vacuum from becoming clogged or overloaded. Keeping the attachments free of hair and tangled fibers is an important part of extending the life of your vacuum. Hair and tangled fibers in the attachments can still damage the vacuum.

Why do vacuum cleaners lose suction?

Clogging is the most prevalent reason for vacuum suction loss. Your appliance’s air flow is impeded if the filters become clogged. Keeping your vacuum clean and free of dirt and debris will help it last longer and use less energy. Additionally, ensure sure the vacuum’s drive belts are in good working order to eliminate the possibility of a malfunction in the main unit. Follow the directions in your appliance’s manual to check the belts.

How do you know what type of vacuum cleaner to buy?

Your housekeeping priorities will dictate what kind of vacuum cleaner you’ll require. The size of your home, the type of flooring you have, and whether or not you have pets are the most crucial considerations. A cordless stick or even a handheld vacuum may be sufficient for smaller houses. You may, however, want to consider an upright or canister vacuum if you have a large family.

A wet-dry vacuum that can both mop and vacuum hardwood floors should be considered for homes with this sort of flooring. It’s also possible to get products that reduce pet hair and dander buildup.

How often should you clean a vacuum?

Every 12 to 18 months, you should give your vacuum and all of its components a thorough cleaning. To some extent, this can be determined by how frequently you use your equipment. Cleaning it more frequently if you use it on a regular basis will be advantageous. Bagless vacuum cleaners with washable filters that are used once or twice a week should be cleaned every month. The easiest way to learn how to properly maintain your vehicle is to consult its owner’s handbook, which will provide you with the most accurate information.
