In addition to being congested and inconvenient to travel there, they can also be pricey.

It’s possible to get lucky with the equipment.

It’s understandable that you might not want to face the realities of working out in a gym with others…

A lot of individuals don’t like having to wait in long lines to use the weight room or deal with folks who aren’t all that kind.

Then working out at home may be the best alternative for you.

Because of this, unless you’re willing to settle with a few simple body weight workouts in your living room, you’ll need to get some equipment.

Most people already know that there are a plethora of alternatives available when it comes to home gym equipment.

A lot of it costs a fortune, but much of it is pointless and will only serve to take up room while slowly collecting dust.

As such, it should be made clear that there are correct and incorrect methods for constructing a home gym.

In this article, I’ll show you how to build a high-quality home gym on a shoestring budget, no matter how little space you have.

The Basics

I’d like to begin by mentioning a few fundamentals.

When deciding on the design of your future home gym, keep these guidelines in mind.

Let’s take a short look at each one.

5 Reasons For Owning A Home Gym | NordicTrack Blog

Avoid All-In-One Expensive Machines

If you’re searching for a piece of exercise equipment that looks good, you’re better off going with something like the Bowflex or something similar.

These devices can cost tens of thousands of dollars, and you’re forced to pay for them over months, if not years, in the same way you would for a second automobile.

There is no need to fall for the infomercial hype about these all-in-one behemoths.

Because of this, you’ll probably never utilize them again once you discover that they aren’t the most effective workouts.

Don’t Turn Your House Into A Gym

The amount of room we have varies among individuals.

When it comes to keeping your training equipment out of the way, a basement, a garage, or a place like that is preferable.

However, if you’re not so fortunate, don’t make the mistake of assuming that your living room can double as a gym, either.

In order to avoid tripping over weights, don’t go excessive with your home gym planning and end up taking up more room than you can afford.

For the most part, large-scale equipment like power racks should be avoided unless you have a dedicated workout space available to you.

As a New Yorker, I can empathize with your plight…

Make It Somewhere You Want To Workout

Creating an enticing exercise room is similar to setting up a productive work environment in that it encourages you to use it more frequently.

There are many ways to do this, such as decorating the walls with inspirational artwork, purchasing a sound system, and ensuring that the lighting in your room is adequate.

After going through the essentials, let’s move on to the substance of this post…

There are three levels of home gyms you may create for yourself, based on your budget and the amount of room you have available.

Home Gym Level 1: Resistance Bands

Resistance bands are the most convenient and least expensive option to begin working out effectively at home.

And the key word here is correctly…

Sure, you can work out with your own body weight for free, or you can follow fads like the 7-minute workout, but neither of these approaches will allow you to gain significant muscle mass.

You need to be able to gradually increase the stress your muscles are under, either by varying the resistance or the number of repetitions, if you want to correctly gain muscular mass.

Sets with many levels of resistance are both commonly accessible and inexpensive. Resistance bands accomplish this fairly effectively.

In most sets, you’ll receive a choice of bands, which you can then join in various ways to raise the resistance, allowing for gradual progressions.

Resistance bands can be used to train all of the major muscle groups, including the shins, chest, and back.

Lastly, the fact that you don’t require much space to train with resistance bands is an important advantage.

When it comes to resistance band training, if you don’t have a dedicated gym space, you can do it at home.

Because they don’t feel like free weights, resistance bands are a drawback for some people.

If you prefer heavy squatting, pressing, and deadlifting at your gym, then they may not be a good fit for you if you enjoy weight training.

Many workouts can be done with them; however, some of the movements can be a little awkward and don’t always match their weight-based counterparts.

Pros: It’s inexpensive and doesn’t take up a lot of space.

Some moves are more difficult than others because they lack the natural feel of free weights.

Resistance bands cost between $40 and $125. (depending on the max level of resistance you want).

Anyone who has limited space for a home gym, is just beginning out, or frequently travels is a good candidate for this product.

Recommended Equipment

All you’ll need to get started is a set of resistance bands that you can adjust to your desired level of difficulty.

We definitely recommend Bodylastics products since they are high quality, don’t snap, and come with door anchors so that you may perform a wider variety of workouts.

The 142-pound set is a good place to start, but if you’re more experienced, you might want to consider the 202-pound or even the 404-pound sets.

For the 142-pound set, 202-pound set, and the 404-pound set, go directly to Amazon and place your order.

Home Gym Level 2: Adjustable Dumbbells & Adjustable Bench (Optional Pull-up Bar)

For those who prefer a more traditional gym experience, this is the most economical and effective option.

An adjustable bench and a pull-up bar are all that you really need to perform the majority of the exercises that you would do in a gym.

Adjustable dumbbells are used rather than normal dumbbells for this exercise.

Only a few different weights are likely to be available unless you have a whole pair of ordinary dumbbells, and probably nothing heavier than 50 pounds or so.

It’s not ideal for making steady improvement in your workouts because you can’t gradually increase the resistance.

Dumbbells with a weight range of 2.5-5 pounds per adjustment, on the other hand, are the most space-efficient option.

Additional exercises can be performed without the use of additional equipment by using an adjustable bench that can be set at flat or inclined angles.

I strongly recommend purchasing a pull-up bar in order to complete this setup.

Despite the fact that this isn’t absolutely necessary, there are very few lat motions that can be performed with dumbbells alone..

With a pull-up bar, you can do both chin-ups and pull-ups, which means that you can truly work your lats.

Here are some of the possible drawbacks of this type of arrangement…

You may find it difficult to reproduce the intensity of certain movements, such as squats and deadlifts, once you have reached a particular degree of strength and muscular development.

Dumbbell squat and deadlift variations can work for some time, but as you progress, they become cumbersome and ineffective without additional equipment.

With a bench, you’ll also need a lot more room than you would with resistance bands.

Cons: It’s a little pricey and takes up a lot of space, but it’s a lot closer to a gym workout.

It is harder to recreate specific core movements at higher levels when using resistance bands instead.

Cost ranges from $400 to $900. (depending on max adjustable dumbbell weight and specific brand of bench).

What It’s Best For: A budget-conscious individual who wants to work out by lifting weights and has a little room to spare.

Recommended Equipment

As previously stated, the essential necessities for this home gym arrangement are a set of adjustable dumbbells and a bench.

Powerblock Elite or Bowflex SelectTech are my top picks for adjustable dumbbells.

As a result of their more rounded shapes, the Bowflex dumbbells are more comfortable to handle than Powerblocks, although they cannot be expanded like the Powerblocks.

Powerblocks, on the other hand, allow you to improve your equipment as your strength increases without having to acquire a new set.

And with these changes, you’ll be able to lift up to 175 pounds of weight per dumbbell, which should be more than adequate for most individuals.

For this reason, we would recommend Powerblocks, followed by Bowflex’s.

You need a weight bench that is both solid and steady, but also doesn’t take up a lot of room.

Because of this, I’d go with the Body Solid adjustable bench.

Even if it costs more than $200, I’d rather recommend this York Fitness model, which you can get from Amazon for less than $100.

Finally, a pull-up bar would round out this home gym set-up.

To ensure that you don’t have to worry about your pull-up bar breaking or collapsing while you’re using it, it’s best to buy from a reputable brand.

The Iron Gym Total Upper Body Workout Bar would be my choice here.

Dips and chin-ups are among the exercises you can perform while using this device.

When compared to other pull-up bars, this one folds up and may be taken on a trip with you.

For approximately $22 on Amazon, you can get the Iron Gym Workout Bar.

Home Gym Level 3: Power Rack, Barbell Set & Adjustable Bench (Optional Adjustable Dumbbells)

The greatest is yet to come…

To be clear, this is the type of home gym setup you should choose if you have the space and the cash to do so.

With a setup like this, you won’t have to worry about losing out on anything from a typical gym, and you won’t have to make any compromises (aside from the chit chat).

A power rack, a barbell with weight plates, and an adjustable bench make up the bulk of this home gym set-up.

Let’s take a quick look at each of these.

The first thing you need to know about a power rack is that it’s the best piece of equipment for barbell exercises.

All of your favorite weightlifting exercises may be done with this machine.

Bicep curls can be performed in a power rack in your home gym.

Even if you’re making fun of it, it’s an essential piece of equipment, so make sure you purchase the appropriate one.

Pull-up and dip bars are included in some of the best power racks, so you won’t be losing out on anything.

A barbell with weight plates is the next item you’ll need.

Just make sure you acquire an olympic bar, enough weight for your more difficult exercises, and potentially some bumper plates. There’s not much else to say about it.

Also, you’ll need an adjustable bench, which can be used at a variety of angles, but I’ve already covered that above so I don’t need to repeat myself.

When it comes to the ultimate home gym setup, if you don’t mind spending a little more money, you might consider purchasing a set of adjustable dumbbells, such as the Powerblocks or Bowflex SelectTech that I’ve already mentioned.

It’s definitely time to point out the drawbacks of this particular set-up for a home gym.

First and foremost, it’s a lot of money. If you want high-quality equipment, you’re looking at a price tag in excess of $1000.

Another consideration is the amount of room required. To be honest, unless you live in a house with a specialized gym space or a basement/garage that you can use for this, you should generally avoid purchasing a power rack.

If you live in a high-rise apartment complex as I do, this kind of arrangement is a fantasy. The hefty weights banging on the floor will surely annoy your downstairs neighbors, even if you have enough room for them.

Pros: It’s just as good as going to the gym, if not better, and you get to do it at home.

Expensive and takes a lot of space are the main drawbacks.

The price ranges from $1000-2000+ (depending on the specific brand of power rack, weights, and adjustable bench you get).

Who It’s Best For: Those who are looking for the best possible home gym setup but lack the necessary funds or room to make it happen.

Recommended Equipment

When purchasing a power rack, there are four main considerations: cost, size, build quality, and whether or not it needs to be fastened to the floor.

In light of the above, I’ve come up with two suggestions for a power rack, and your final decision will be heavily influenced by the second.

You can get the Powertec Power Rack, which costs $730 on Amazon, for $730 if you’re searching for a space-saving power rack that doesn’t need to be fastened down.

A dip and pull-up bar is already included, and a wide choice of powertec accessories can be added.

The Rogue Fitness R3 Power Rack is a second alternative.

It’s a little more expensive, but it’s also a little more spacious, and it’s often regarded as the pinnacle of home gym power racks.

Although it is fastened to the floor, unlike the Powertec rack, this is a major drawback.

In addition to using the ‘west side hole design,’ the Rogue rack has a few other advantages.

This means that when you bench press, squat, or do any other exercise, you may precisely adjust the pins and the safety bar to match your height and arm length. However, it’s a lovely touch but not needed.

Rogue Fitness sells the R3 Power Rack for $700 directly on their website.

You’ll need a barbell set once you’ve decided on a power rack setup.

This is a normal 7-foot and 45-pound Olympic bar, which I stated before in this article’s introduction to the subject.

Many olympic bars are available, but I recommend the Body Solid Olympic Bar ($112 here on Amazon) or the more expensive Rogue Fitness Ohio Bar ($282 here on their website) as two of the better options.

You’ll also require weight plates, for which there are a plethora of alternatives.

When deadlifting or olympic lifting huge weights, you may want to use ‘bumper plates,’ which are quieter weight plates composed of rubber or aluminum.

Typically, olympic weight plates are suitable for most people (at least to start). In order to get started, you’ll need at least 300 pounds of weight, and you may always add more later on.

At least four 45-pound plates, two 25-pound plates, two 10-pound plates, two 5-pound plates, and two 2.5-pound plates are needed.

You may then acquire more 45-pound plates as you need them, which is the most cost-effective way to raise the weight of your exercises incrementally.

Rogue Fitness Olympic Plates or Body Solid Olympic Plates are the two products I’d recommend.

In both cases, you’re paying about $1 per pound, but it’s an investment in your ultimate home gym that will pay off in the long run.

Finally, you’ll need a bench that can be adjusted. Depending on your budget, I’d recommend either the Body Solid or York Fitness model.

You should also order a set of adjustable dumbbells (either the Powerblocks or the Bowflex SelectTech dumbbells, as previously described) if you want to complete the set-up and don’t mind spending the extra money.

Home Gym Extras

You may want to purchase a few additional pieces of equipment after we’ve reviewed the three different home gym setups that I propose.

I’ll go over each of them briefly, and which brands I recommend.

Flooring

If you’re worried about noise or simply want to preserve your floors, you should consider purchasing gym flooring for your house.

However, even if you only use dumbbells, it’s a good idea to invest in some if you’re planning on doing a lot of deadlifts or other heavy barbell exercises.

I’d go with CAP Barbell’s heavy-duty interlocking flooring. It’s cheap and simple to assemble.

Amazon allows you to order as much as you need.

Ab Wheel

These small wheels are a low-cost, high-impact way to strengthen your abs at home.

One of my favorite pieces of ab equipment, despite its simplicity, is the elliptical.

I’d recommend Valeo’s $12 product, which you can find here on Amazon.

Assistance Bands

The assistance bands are a wonderful option if you’re doing a home workout that includes pull-ups or chin-ups, but you can’t do them for more than a few repetitions at a time with your own weight.

If you want to get better at doing pull-ups, you can use these to gradually decrease the amount of assistance you utilize.

For $35, you can acquire this 2-pack of Body Bands assistance bands, which I highly suggest.

Dip Belt

As for dips and pull-ups, if they become too easy with only your body weight, then you should invest in a dip belt.

Weight plates or a dumbbell can be used to add additional weight.

This Harbinger leather dip belt, available for $35 on Amazon, is a great option.

What About Cardio?

So far, my advice on setting up a home gym has focused solely on strength training.

But I’m sure that some of you would like to do some cardio as well.

If you want to perform cardio at home, there are a variety of solutions to consider based on your budget and available space.

Jump Rope

In general, this is what I suggest to my clients who want to undertake aerobic exercises at home.

HIIT cardio exercises benefit greatly from the deceptively simple exercise of jumping rope.

Jump ropes, on the other hand, are inexpensive and don’t take up a lot of space.

Crossrope’s heavy-duty jump rope set is what I’d recommend.

Because it comes with both fast ropes and heavy ropes, you’ll have plenty of alternatives when it comes to training.

For $54, you can purchase a Crossrope set from Amazon.

Exercise Bike

An exercise bike is an option if you have the room and funds to make the purchase.

Since exercise cycles have a mild impact, they’re a good choice for people with knee problems who want to stay in shape.

Schwinn’s upright and recumbent models are both excellent options.

If you’re willing to spend a few hundred dollars, you may expect them to last for many years, even with heavy use.

Vertical Climber

I’d bet that you haven’t heard of this one before…

Although vertical climbers are less well-known, they deliver an as effective workout (in terms of calories burned).

In addition, they don’t take up as much room as exercise bikes because of their vertical form.

For $230, you can get the Maxi Climber at Amazon.com.

What does a Home Gym Mean to You?

Some like to workout alongside others as a vacation from everyday life, whereas others choose to invest in their own personal gym.

There is nothing more convenient than being able to walk straight from the dinner table to your own private training area.

The first step is to figure out what you want to accomplish through exercise and what you need to do it. You’ll need to know the answer to this question in order to proceed with designing the ideal home gym for your needs.

Home Gym Equipment Considerations

There are a few things to keep in mind while shopping for garage gym ideas or gym equipment to make sure your training space is personalized to your needs.

Budget

This is likely the first thing you’ll think about. Having a fitness wishlist is a great starting point, but narrowing it down to the essentials is the next step. Consider using personal financing to purchase the gym equipment you need without having to fork over the upfront payment.

Space Requirements

Is there enough room around you to complete the workouts you desire? Can you do clean and jerks, etc., in your garage if you have a barbell and a meter on each side? Wood rings can be suspended from pull-up bars for bodyweight training, but some routines may not be doable if you’re aiming to establish a modest home gym.

Structure

It’s important to make sure the structure is sturdy enough to support the equipment you’ll be using, both below and above you. In order to make sure that your new pull-up bar or wall-mounted rack is properly secured to the floor or ceiling, we suggest consulting a local hardware store or builder before making your purchase.

Safety

Because most workouts in the home gym are done by one person, security is a major concern. If you’re going to be using a squat rack, it’s important to think about the rest of your training space. To have your own gym is excellent, as long as you have the space for it. This is especially important if you plan on storing tools or gardening supplies in this area.

What do I Need for an At-Home Gym?

In order to assist you build out your home gym, we’ve compiled a list of the most essential home gym equipment. We’ve compiled a list of essentials for any home gym, regardless of your preferred training method:

Bench

The IPF basic flat bench and an adjustable, wide pad are among the options available. It’s like having a swiss army knife of training equipment: a home exercise bench.

An investment in a high-quality barbell is an excellent way to get started with weightlifting in the comfort of your own home gym.

Resistance Bands

Stretches like the sofa stretch, dynamic hamstring stretching, and PNF may all be performed with resistance bands instead of a partner. In powerlifting, these can be utilized as dynamic resistance on a barbell to increase speed and power throughout the squat and deadlift range of motion.

Kettle Bells

The kettlebell is a popular piece of home gym equipment for a good reason: it is simple and effective. Despite their simplicity, they are one of the most versatile pieces of equipment on the market. Strength, stability, and explosiveness may all be cultivated with kettlebell exercises, which educate core-to-extremity motor patterns that can be used in any sport.

The Benefits of Home Gyms

Let us know if you’re still undecided. You’ll enjoy these perks if you have a home gym of your own.

Home Gyms Are Convenient

Having a gym in your own home is a significant advantage, but it’s not the only one. As soon as you wake up, take your pre-workout meal, and walk the 15 steps to the garage, you’re ready to start clattering away. Forget waiting for the curl bro to get out of the squat rack and wiping the rower of someone else’s flop perspiration. It’s realistic to suppose that you’ll be more committed to your training plan due of this convenience element. There’s nothing wrong with 45 minutes under the barbell when you don’t have a 20-minute commute ahead of you.

You Can Customize it

In the end, it’s your home gym, and that’s the best part. All of yours. CrossFit is something you’re interested in, right? Invest in some simple squatting equipment, such as a plyometric box, rings, and a couple kettlebells. Do you prefer to lift weights? A sturdy power rack, a good barbell and enough of weight plates are all good choices. Here we go: You get the picture. Alternatively, you may be looking for a single piece of equipment that can do all of your needs at once (with the option to add more to it).

You don’t have to answer to anyone when it comes to your own personal gym.

It’s Cheaper in the Long Run

Last but not least, home gyms save money over time. The cost of home gym equipment can be prohibitive, but it’s worth it in the long run. Owning your own equipment can save you money in two ways over a lengthy period of time. First, you may be able to save money by canceling your gym membership, which can mount up over time. Because you don’t have to drive or wait in line for equipment, you save both time and money. For the vast majority of people, this extra time may be put to good use in other areas of their lives.

Is a Home Gym Right for You?

Building your own gym or buying home gym equipment may be a more cost-effective option for you if you consider the following factors.

What are your strength goals?

If you want to be like Brian Shaw, you need to take a hard look at what that means. Atlas stones, logs, hundreds of pounds of weights, farmer’s handles, and other strongman tools are all necessary investments. In this case, locating a nearby gym with all of the necessary equipment may be your best bet. It’s not impossible to be a top athlete and have a home gym, but it will take effort and money to do so.

How much space do you have?

This is a good starting point for figuring out what kind of gear is ideal for you in terms of both your goals and your daily routine. If you have a one-bedroom apartment, Tempo or resistance bands may be the best solution for you at this time. A two-car garage, on the other hand, gives you a lot more room to set up your entire operation.

What’s your budget?

This is a straightforward question that can be answered in a variety of ways. It’s important to take into account your existing gym costs and the cost of gym equipment before deciding whether or not to invest in a home gym. No need to buy everything all at once, though. To get started, you’ll need a squat stand, a barbell with weights attached, a bench, and some space.

If you’re looking to enhance your health and fitness, that’s a terrific opportunity to workout at any time of the day.
